The basics - can be stand-alone salad just with these ingredients:
Olive oil
Mozzarella Fresca (don't get generic brand, it'll just taste like Kraft mozzarella)
Fresh basil leaves
Tomatoes (any variation...fresh, sundried, marinated...)
Salt to taste (coarse Kosher salt "for the discerning chef")

The embellishments (mix and match any of the following and add to above):
Pine nuts, pan-roasted
Vinegar (such as balsamic or red wine)
Pasta
Olives
Italian seasoning blend
Herbs de Provence
Cracked (freshly ground) black pepper
Pepperoni or Salami
Artichokes (marinated hearts)
Capers - gotta try it at least once!
